Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
Trauma is something that everyone, to some degree, experiences throughout their life. Traumatic events: domestic violence, rape, assault, a loved one dying, natural disasters, and war are all very real and unavoidable experiences that many of us go through.
When we experience trauma, our mind and body automatically respond with a fight, flight, or freeze response in order to protect us. This is done as a survival mechanism to protect us from the full impact of the trauma. It is in our nature to try to defend ourselves against danger, avoid it together, or in some cases “freeze” until the danger is no longer a threat.
Post Traumatic Stress can be a long-term battle that can be provoked by recognizable triggers or with no warning at all. PTSD can be crippling, affecting every angle of an individual’s life from their relationships to their job to their overall physical well-being. PTSD may show up in the form of uncontrollable emotions such as anger or sadness. It can cause nightmares and for the individual to “relive” the traumatic experience even during consciousness.
